Ministry of Space collective

Founded in 2010, the Ministry of Space is a Belgrade-based collective dedicated to equitable urban development. Our journey began with transforming unused spaces through direct action, community building, and horizontal governance. We have revitalised abandoned areas into vibrant cultural and social centres like Inex Film, Magacin, Street Gallery, and Cinema Zvezda, promoting community governance and fair access to resources. These initiatives have inspired similar actions regionally, advocating for systemic change through policy production and transnational exchanges.
Beyond these on-the-ground efforts, we tackle systemic issues in urban planning through research, community work, and policy advocacy. We support citizens in securing equal access to urban resources, empowering them to shape their neighbourhoods according to their needs and interests. By experimenting with citizens’ assemblies, we enhance civic engagement and improve urban planning decisions.
Additionally, we campaign for just housing policies, striving to make housing more affordable and secure. Our work also focuses on climate change, examining its urban impacts and proposing fair and inclusive alternatives that bridge socio-economic divides. Our multifaceted approach aims to build inclusive, just, and resilient cities for all.
We have showcased our efforts through numerous significant exhibitions, including Living the City: About Cities, People and Stories, Berlin, commissioned by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community within the National Urban Development Policy framework. Additionally, we have participated in the Salon of Architecture, Novi Sad; the Prague Quadrennial 2023; the Fourth Salon of Architecture, Montenegro, and the exhibition What Happened to the Museum of Contemporary Art? Non-Exhibition of Documentation, Artistic Interventions, and Building Interiors, Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade, among many others.
