Some Actions Which Haven’t Been Defined Yet in the Revolution, 2011
Video-animation, 12’ 22’’
The works of Sun Xun are mainly drawings, short animations or combinations of both. He often exhibits individual cell drawings and other mixed media works alongside his films. His series of small mixed media works, entitled Shock of Time (2006), challenged conventional notions of time, history and narration by highlighting certain passages of history, using such media as newspapers, books and other documentary material. Some Actions Which Haven’t Been Defined yet in the Revolution (2011), the animation shown here, took over a year to produce as each image was made by woodblock printing – a medium that, evoking the time of the Cultural Revolution, still implies a revolutionary spirit. The forms and narratives of this film are violent, telling the story of a poor, remote country, the memory of which still continues to reverberate in the present.
