The starting point of this film is emergency money printed in the 1920s, banknotes used during times of crisis and inflation, or to serve enclaves of people without set structures or definite borders, such as those in ghettos, concentration camps or colonies. These meticulously designed notes are often visually dramatic, with propagandist messages in their words and images. The title of the film is based on a passage from Aristotle’s Politics, in which he argues that for money to increase by interest is the most ‘unnatural’ mode of creating wealth because, unlike livestock and crops, it cannot breed as it ‘exists not by nature but by law’.
