Part of the project Museum of Childhood
Production 56th October Salon, 2016
This photo installation Injured Parties, part of ‘The Museum of Childhood’ project, deals with time, here used, metaphorically and literally, as both a material and a process. The title refers to a legal term used to denote someone whose property or personal rights are threatened or violated by other parties. Touched by time, space or human action, these old photographs – abandoned imprints of identity – have become twisted, illegible or damaged in many ways.
Their perishable material embodies the convoluted, constantly transforming fragility of historical tissue and remembrance as time marches into oblivion. The artistic appropriation here of these neglected, faceless lives is neither a sentimental act nor an ethical warning about how the past, memory and identity are perverted or lost. Their re-contextualization is first and foremost an act of personal introspection. These photo-documents – that have moved from active participation in life to abandonment – are here recycled in an artistic process as a personal response to issues of existence and survival in turbulent and changing social-historical circumstances.
