The new Yugoslav film, better known as the ‘Black Wave’ cinema in the mid, was a prolific phase in the Yugoslav 60s and early 70s that introduced the failure of the protagonist as the means of critical examination of the society. The authors rejected the rules and ideals of an optimistic official culture, and openly exposed the dark side of Yugoslav socialist society caused by the implementation of a market economy and its social consequences. The main characters portrayed in these films expressed a human size failure and despair in an ordinary manner; their lives often ending abruptly and violently, for instance while sitting on the toilet or falling face down into a small pond. With The Cause of Death I have decided to take over the roles of five key “Black Wave” characters and re-enact their culminating scenes. As the protagonist of this story, I embody two modes of existence: appropriating texts and actions from Yugoslav film history, and inserting them into the settings and conditions of my present life.
Milena from “W.R.: Mysteries of Organisms” (1971) Dušan Makavejev,
Jugoslava from “Early Works” (1969) Želimir Žilnik,
Ive from “The Ambush” (1969) Živojin Pavlović,
Tom from “Plastic Jesus” (1971) Lazar Stojanović,
Dzimi Barka from “When I Am Dead And Gone” (1967) Živojin Pavlović.
The “bullet” that kills all five characters comes from the same “gun” that represents failure on different political and cultural levels. It signifies questions regarding revolutionary ideas that transgress that particular historic period and challenges the belief in art as an agency of change. It marks the critical point where Yugoslav society, paradoxically within the ruling Marxist ideology, showed very first signs of a neo-liberal turn.
Today’s reality is shaped by the consequences of these actions and that is why this fatal “bullet” can travel through time.As the famous Saint-Just quote states in the closing of the Žilnik‘s film “Early Works”: “Those who make revolution half way only dig their own graves”.
Experimentalmusic based on the original film dialogues and songs, was made in collaboration with composer Jasna Veličković. Scenography and cinematography was developed with Aleksandar Saničanin and filmed in the dunes of north Holland.
