Cecilia Edefalk, one of Swedens´s internationally most prominent artists, is probably best known for her paintings. But photography has been part of her works since her first solo exhibition at the end of the eighties. In addition to a number of paintings she exhibited a photograph that had light as its main element. And it is light, as well as in increasingly manifest interest in existential questions, that is the core of her work.

By working with series of paintings almost exclusively based on photographic material, she amplifies the abstraction and creates a distinctive spatiality where the gaze and perception are central. Through the repetition she invites us to stop; she insists that we would pay attention to the meaning of the image. She plays with relations of scale and how our experience of an image changes with every change in format. She has at times used her own paintings as motifs, and by photographing them she has been able to take sections from the images and create new narratives.

In the photograph self-portrait (1993/2011), the viewer looks straight into the muszzle of a pistol, and right behind Cecilia Edefalk’s concentrated face. With her right hand she points the loaded gun at the camera lens she is aiming at. She threatens neither the viewer of the photograph nor the photographer; instead she is shooting the photographic image of herself.

The image says a lot about Cecilia Edefalk’s work. It is about the veracity of the photographic image and whether a portrait really can capture a person’s real self. She points to the fact that photographs don’t necessarily represent the actual situation but can just as well be something quite different.
