Artur Żmijewski

Artur Żmijewski (1966) is a Polish visual artist, filmmaker and photographer. During the period 1990-1995 he studied at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1991 he has exhibited in solo and goup shows. He is particularly interested in the power of art and its relation to politics. From an almost anthropological viewpoint he investigates social norms, morality and representations of power in today’s society and the effects that art have on it. His works range in scope unpleasant topics that go into taboo sphere, and dealing with trauma both of individuals and society. During the 1990s, Żmijewski was a leading force in the realm of critical art, his point of departure being the problems of body and The Other. Żmijewski is a regular collaborator of the Foksal Gallery Foundation. Lives and works in Warsaw.
